Moonj also known as Wild grass, is the outer layer of 'Sarpat' grass. Moonj richly grows along te banks of the Jamuna River in Uttar Pradesh. In various small villages around the city, this grass is traditionally used for making handicraft products such as baskets and other household items. Th outer layer of the plant is peeled and knotted as it is easy to store and dry. These knots are locally called as 'Balla'.Coiling basketry technique is used through which they are so tightly coiled that they are almost waterproof and long lasting. They are then dyed on bright colours of traditional patterns.
It is natural, eco-friendly and washable.
